Frequently Asked Questions:

We realize you may have specific questions concerning the fraternity, so we made the following list to help you with the most common concerns regarding ABE. If you need more information, check out one of our information sessions, fill out online contact request, or email our Rush Chair at abeuconn@gmail.com
Thanks, and we hope to see you at ABE Rush!

How do I join?

Like most social fraternities, there is both a Rush and Pledge period to go through in order to become a member of Alpha Beta Epsilon. It is important to attend rush events and show interest in the fraternity as well as meet active members and be sure for yourself that the fraternity is something that you want to be a part of.

What majors are represented within ABE?

Though we do not accept one particular major over another, the majority of our members are either in MCB, PNB or Biological sciences. We understand there is a diverse spectrum of biological concentrations, and we do not specify one over another. We do insist that the particular major is not represented by another fraternity. (ie. we do not accept pharmacy)

Is there an individual GPA cutoff?

In order to take part in the pledgeing process, you must have a minimum of a 2.5 Cumulative GPA.

What type of events do you do as a fraternity?

Each semester our chairs and committees organize fraternity involvement in service projects at UConn and in the surrounding community, as well as many academic and social events to maintain an intellectual and professional environment and provide for a strong brotherhood between members. To name just a few: Relay for Life, HuskyThon, future involvement in AIDS weeks, academic workshops, research seminars, Homecoming, parties and other social events.

Is there a Pledge Period? If so, what is involved?

Yes, there is a pledge period that constitutes most of your first semester of membership. Typically, it is only 7 weeks in length, and contrary to some popular notions, will be one of your best times during college. Alpha Beta Epsilon follows University guidelines regarding hazing and other fraternity operations. We look to maintain a professional atmosphere.

What sort of time commitment does ABE involve?

Our members attend weekly chapter meetings, typically on Sundays, and otherwise participate in events that are scheduled for the week. However, the time you put into ABE may change based on the different events. For example, Homecoming and service events are major events that our fraternity puts a lot of time and work into. Still, if you wish to get even more involved, there are always opportunities to become an officer and a leader in the fraternity. Ultimately, the ABE experience will only be as good as the time you put into it!

Does ABE have affiliations with the Pre-medical and Pre-Dental societies?

Though we are not directly affiliated with either society, many of members are directly involved in both and in fact have officer-leadership positions in these societies, not uncommon for the typical ABE member.

Does ABE have an official Greek residence (Greek village or otherwise)?

No, but many of our members do live together off-campus. Various ABE events and functions are held off-campus along with particular social events.

What are the advantages to joining ABE?

By becoming a member of Alpha Beta Epsilon, you will be giving yourself every opportunity to become a model student not only in the classroom, but also a model leader at UConn. The field of biological sciences is a competative field that often forces its students away from each other. At ABE, you will find quite the opposite. You will find that the members of ABE are dedicated not only to their work, but also to their fellow brothers and sisters for now and in the future. College is an important time to make the right connections and network for the future. ABE is an excellent place to make that happen.
